Gamplay

Ghost’s N Goblins is a platforming game much like Super Mario and Contra. When the game starts you have the choice either choose Arthur or Lancelot as your hero. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and different set of weapons that they can find during play. The game features an armor system where if you get hit by enemy projectile or touching an enemy, you will lose armor points. If Arthur or Lancelot armor points are gone the armor is destroyed and you’ll be fighting demons in your boxers and die if you get hit again. Every time a new game begins, only 3 lives are given, and no 1ups and health potions can be found in the game.

The weapons collected is what makes the game memorable.  Some are fun to use, some are just pretty useless, such as the boomerang that can only fires one boomerang at a time. To bad in the game you won’t be collecting all sorts of weapons. At most you will find 1-2 chests containing a weapon per level. Sometimes when a chest pops on the screen there is a chance that it’s a trap. The trap is turning the hero into a chicken.

The rarest item to come across is the gold armor. The gold armor is really cool if they happen to spawn. The armor makes the hero glow and the weapon damage becomes stronger as well as gaining magic abilities with a press of a button. The magic button creates a special attack that is different with each weapon. For example a lance magic spell is a projectile dragon. Magic spells cannot be spammed you most wait for it to charge up again in order to be used.

The platforming levels in the game can be very challenging if you have never played a Ghost’N Goblins game before.  The controls and physics of the game may take some getting use to, but as you continue to play it can be rather fun.

At the end of each level there will be a pretty easy boss fight but that’s if you can make it that far in the level.

Controls

The controls is a simple D-pad with 2 buttons, 3 if the the special armor is obtained. This is the best overall D-pad I have ever used in any iPod game. The distance of the buttons and the responsive of the D-pad is superb.

Graphics

The graphics are revamped in 3D and looks nice, the screen caps I took may not look great but trust me it looks great. A great job as expecting from a Capcom game.

Sound

Sounds good to me no complaints here.

Replay Value

So I actually beat the game in about 5-6 hours, on and off of course, there’s only 6 levels in the game and can be easily beaten in under an hour if you are really good and familiar with the level design. The meat of the game is in the difficult platforming, you will die from falling in pits more than enemies. If the game is too difficult and you need and edge, you can purchase special power ups for $0.99 in game. Which I think is useless because it is doable to beat without any purchase level ups.

Conclusion

Ghost’N Goblins Gold Knights is a solid game for any platforming lover.  Expect an interesting ending that leaves many possibilities for future updates. So think of it as a return in investment when you buy this game. The only deal breaker for me is the replay value after beating the game, the number of levels,  and lack of power ups and special suits scattered in the game. The truth is out Ghost’s N Goblin Gold Knights get a score of 8 out of 10. Get it while it’s still on sale.
