A historical simulation of the three kingdoms period of Chinese history (2nd & 3rd centuries AD), the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (RTK) is now storming the iPhone and iPod Touch, turning every strategy game lovers’ heads. Arguably the best turn base strategy game, RTK Touch continues the franchise’s success with yet another hit.

If you think that there must be a lot less features in RTK Touch compared to the previous console RTK games, then you can’t be any more wrong. The RTK Touch comes with most of the original game play features and then some. There are 5 scenarios (4 historical and 1 fictional) for players to choose from: The Fall of Dong Zhuo, Heroes of Legend, Zhuge Liang Rises, The Three Kingdoms, Final Conflict.

There are a total of 255 characters, each with its own abilities, so players can employ the ones that most fit their conquering plan, whether it’s through tactical strategy with intelligent characters or through overwhelming force with powerful warriors. The goal is to simply conquer all lands, uniting the warring states under one banner.

The amazing amount of features and depths may be a little tough for new comers to catch on immediately. This is exactly why the game comes with a load of help features including a game simulating tutorial, glossary, and hints; just need to spend a little time on reading through them. Once used to the game play and features, it’s time to worry when you’ll stop playing this highly addictive game.

The user interface, newly designed for the touch screen, is extremely intuitive and user-friendly. After spending a little time playing the game, it’s a breeze going through all your cities during each turn. I can even play the game with one hand (left or right), using just the thumb to control. But some spots may be a little too small and hard to pinpoint; then again the developers is considerate enough to add in a zoom in function through double touch/click.

The game play follows exactly of those from the original console RTK games. In the strategy phase, each turn represents a month and will loop through every city under player’s control with the addition of notices whenever there’s an important event such as battle or the death of a sovereign. During the battle phase, one turn per day and the battle will end after 30 days (it’s considered a lost for the attacker if not able to take down a city within the 30 days period).

It’s impossible to include all the in-depth features, so here are some main controls in the game. Under Domestic, players can Develop, Charity, Merchant, Reward, Search, and Employ; Under Foreign, there are Goodwill, Rumor, Incite, and Arson; Military provides March, Move, Recruit, and Drill; Sovereign allows Delegate, Dismiss, Advisor, and Rest. The main features to notice, that make the game stands out, are the Search and Employ functions that allow players to discovered more characters and attempt to hire any character, including those under the enemies.

A big flaw of the game is that there’s no auto save. For such a caliber game, auto save is a must have; sooner or later one will for sure forget to save the game and lost a couple hours of progress. But I’m pretty sure there’ll be an update for this very soon. Another feature I would like to see added is the ability to combine attack with a fellow city or even a third party sovereign. Last but not least, it’ll be great to give characters the ability to learn certain attacks such as archer and water attack.

With the above additions this is a 10 rating game, for now, Romance of the Three Kingdoms Touch is Da Bomb 9 out of 10.
