So I was lucky to be part of the beta testing for Stick Fu, the game is unreleased, so here is a first glimpse of Stick Fu.

Gameplay

The objective of the game is to survive and fight all the stick men that come after you as well as stick boss at the end of the level. After finishing every level the stick fighter will level up and points must be disturbed among three stats; attack, defense, and health points. The game is endless there’s not much of story to the game other than you’re a law enforcement stick figure cleaning up the mean streets.

The game features a very simple combo system. By pressing the attack button consecutively the stick figure will do combo that builds up a special meter. For every hit you take the special will go down. Usually 5 consecutive hits will charge it and the second button will be active to use the special. The are 5 specials in the game, a flying jump kick combo, a shotgun that fires twice, a spinning bo staff attack, helicopter kick and finally the stick figure will jump in the air and crash into the ground summoning spikes around it. Once that special bar is full the game will randomly select one of these specials.

The stick fu fighter also other abilities such as rolling back and a forward dash to avoid enemy attacks. Stick Fu can even finish off the enemies with one hit which randomly happens.

Stick Fu’s features 5 levels that you will play over and over on rotation. The only difference is that the difficulty of the game will increase with mobs hitting harder and more health.

Controls

The controls are the game is very similar to most 2D genre games that are on the iTunes store. You have you’re moving left and right buttons, attack and the special button. There is a game tutorial at the start of each new game, to help familiarize with the game. The only frustration I had was that one enemy would be floored with one hit and I have to wait for them to get back up, which can be annoying when there’s only one enemy on the screen. There is a way to finish off the enemy on the ground but it is very random.

Graphics

Stick Fu graphics are bright colorful and pretty bloody. Each punch and kick that is landed the blood will have blood spewing out. Stick figures also materialize instead of running from the sides of the screen which is also cool. The backgrounds in the game are nicely drawn and go with will the stick fighter animation. Only draw back with 5 background level design that it may get boring. The games options also let you choose the color of the stick fighter and the blood as well adding some customization.

Sounds

The game features 4 music tracks that matches well with the game and of course you have your grunting noises and knuckle sounds. Stick Fu lets you to play your play list on your iPod which is always an added plus.

Replay Value

Like any beat’em up, it is very repetitive; basically you run up spam one or two button and repeat on the next stick figure. After 20 levels or so the game can get pretty bland due to the repetitive nature. The game is fun undoubtedly fun in quick burst, but after a long sitting, you won’t have the urge to replay from stage one again.

Conclusion

Stick Fu’s production value of the game is very high, the graphics are clean the sound is great and gameplay is solid. The only drawback is the repetitiveness of the game after to 20 stages of beating up stick figures and rotation of the stages. The truth is out Stick Fu gets a score of 8 out of 10. GET IT! When it comes out.
